The UC Ergonomics Research & Graduate Training Program and Center for Occupational and Environmental Health are pleased to present the Online Ergonomics Training Program.

The UC Ergonomics Program has a history of training formative leaders in the field with graduates and post docs becoming professors at top institutions, leaders at government agencies, and innovators at numerous Silicon Valley companies, such as Apple, Google, and others. Now, the excellent training and preparation is accessible to anyone living anywhere around the world!

The emphasis in this program is on understanding how to design work tasks, tools, and workstations to minimize cognitive and physical loads, reduce fatigue and injury, and improve productivity. Coursework includes content in engineering, design, physiology, anthropometry, biomechanics, public health, statistics, environmental health sciences, exposure and risk assessment, root cause analysis and more.

This program is designed to provide expertise in the core competencies required for CPE Certification by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE). These courses are ideal for learners with a degree in a related field (Industrial Engineering, Physicial/Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology/Biomechanics, Occupational Health Nursing, Industrial Hygiene, etc.) or as a refresher for those with degrees in Human Factors. Our goal is to provide experience and emerging (new) Ergonomists with the latest knowledge, best practices, and preparation so they can get their CPE certification and have a significant impact on worker health and productivity.

This course presents fundamental concepts from multiple disciplines that are essential to practicing ergonomics, and pulls these pieces together to ensure a comprehensive approach to both minimize injury and optimize worker performance.

> Evidence Based Practice: Applying Research to Ergonomic Challenges in the Workplace (ERG110)
October 22 – December 21, 2018 (Online)

Instructor: Carisa Harris, PhD, CPE, PT

This course is designed to prepare the student to be a competent consumer of research by applying a thorough critique of various papers and applying conclusions from published research into ergonomic practice. Students will learn how to develop testable hypotheses and pertinent methodology for field projects assessing a workplace intervention.

> Introduction to Physical Ergonomics and Human Factors (ERG120)
January 7 – March 1, 2019 (Online)

Instructor: Jim Potvin, PhD

This course will provide an overview of ergonomics and occupational biomechanics. The course will explore pathophysiology and risk factors of upper extremity and back loading at work, measurement of force and posture, models for risk assessment, anthropometry applied to task and workstation design, tool design, and structure of successful ergonomics programs. Students will also conduct a detailed job analysis and design a workplace intervention.

> Introduction to Cognitive Ergonomics and Human Factors (ERG130)
March 4 – April 26, 2019 (Online)

Instructor: Dan Nathan Roberts, PhD, CPE

This course deals with fundamentals of cognitive engineering and user-centered design. It is designed to introduce students to different disciplinary approaches and respective interpretations of what it means to do user-centered and learner-centered design. Students will receive an introduction into the psychological make-up of individuals, and insight on cognitive and socio-cognitive theories of how people differently perceive and interact with the world and others, as well as an introduction to principles of how people learn.

> Prevention Through Design (ERG140)

The design of environments, tools, systems, and interfaces can have a dramatic impact on exposures associated with musculoskeletal disorders, fatigue, and error. This course will provide an overview of topics related to the design of products, tools, environments, software and various interfaces on common devices. Familiarity with physical and cognitive human factors and ergonomics will be applied to the iterative design process to solve design problems. A focus on the pro basic engineering design and prototype concepts will be introduced.

> Introduction to Systems Approach and Macro Ergonomics (ERG 150)
June 24 – August 23, 2019 (Online)

Instructor: Michelle Robertson

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Macroergonomics field. Macroergonomics, also known as the third generation of ergonomics, is a top-down sociotechnical systems approach to the design of organizations, work systems, and jobs. The goal of macroergonomics is a fully harmonized work system at both the macro- and micro-ergonomic level which results in improved productivity, job satisfaction, health and safety, and employee commitment.

> Ergonomic Skills Class & Workshop (ERG 160)
July 10 – July 12, 2019 (Hands-on Workshop in Richmond, CA)

This hands on workshop will build on concepts and skills introduced in the introductory courses. Students will learn how the various risk assessment tools were designed and specifically how to implement their use in challenging environments. Students will read validation and reliability studies so they become experts in use of the various physical exposure and risk assessment tools used in the field.
